The text of the draft resolution strongly criticizes Israel, in the UN it is discussed to end the occupation of the Palestinian territories
United Nations member states will today discuss the Palestinian demand to end the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories within 12 months. The text of the draft resolution, which has faced harsh criticism from Israel, is based on an advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice, which describes as "illegal" the continuous Israeli occupation since 1967.
"Israel is obliged to end its illegal presence in the occupied Palestinian territory as soon as possible," said the opinion compiled by the UN General Assembly. In response, Arab countries have called for a special session of this assembly.
The draft resolution also calls for the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Palestinian territories, the ban on new settlements, the return of seized land and property, and the possibility of the return of displaced Palestinians.
The adoption of the resolution would be "a reward for terrorism and a message to the world that the barbaric massacre of children, the rape of women and the kidnapping of innocent civilians are valid tactics ," said Israel's ambassador to the UN, Danny Danon.
He referred to the attack by Hamas - a terrorist group declared by the US and other powers - on October 7 last year in Israel. That day, Hamas killed over 1,200 people and took over 250 hostages, of whom nearly 100 are still being held in Gaza. In response to the attack, Israel continues its offensive in Gaza - enclave controlled by Hamas. According to the authorities there, more than 41,000 people have been killed by Israeli attacks. The UN Human Rights Office says that most of the victims are women and children./REL
