Trump and Putin to discuss ceasefire in Ukraine

US President Donald Trump will hold a crucial phone call with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin on Tuesday for a long-awaited ceasefire in Ukraine.

Trump said Monday that “many elements of the final deal have been agreed to, but much remains,” confirming the conversation with Putin on his Truth Social platform. The proposal includes a 30-day temporary pause in fighting in the region, which Ukraine has already accepted.

The Trump administration has expressed optimism about reaching a deal with Moscow, with Trump telling reporters: "We'll see if we can reach a peace agreement. And I think we'll be able to do that."

Key issues of discussion

According to Trump, the US and Russia have discussed territories, power plants and the division of certain assets between Russia and Ukraine as part of the deal. One of the most hotly contested points remains the fate of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, which has become a point of international tension since the Russian invasion.

Caroline Leavitt, the White House press secretary, said that "Trump will address the Zaporizhia issue in his conversation with Putin."

Putin, on the other hand, has raised questions about the fate of Ukrainian soldiers in the Kursk region, stressing that there are still unanswered questions before Moscow gives its approval for a ceasefire. The Kremlin has also opposed the idea of NATO peacekeeping troops overseeing the ceasefire.
