Trump pledges accountability for the people who investigated him

"Our forefathers transformed this Department of Justice into the Department of Injustice. But I stand here today in front of you to declare that those days are over and will never return. They will never come back," said President Trump.

During the years he was not in office, the department twice indicted former President Trump for keeping classified documents on his Florida property and for trying to overturn the result of the 2020 presidential election. Both investigative files were discontinued after President Trump won the election in November. The Justice Department cited as the basis for this action the early policy of not bringing charges against an incumbent president.

"Now, as the highest law enforcement official in our country, I will insist and demand full and comprehensive accountability for the violations and abuses that have occurred. The American people have given us a mandate, a mandate that very few people thought could be possible," President Trump said.

The new US administration has fired prosecutors who investigated President Trump during former President Biden's administration and is looking into the work of thousands of FBI agents who investigated some of his supporters who entered the Capitol on January 6, 2021.

Legislator Jamie Raskin, leader of Democrats on the House Judiciary Committee, called President Trump's speech "a shocking violation of the traditional boundaries between independent enforcement of criminal legislation and presidential political powers."

Speaking in front of the Justice Department building shortly after President Trump's speech, lawmaker Raskin said that "no other president in American history has announced from inside the headquarters of the Department of Justice an agenda of criminal investigations and punishments against his political opponents."

President Trump has long criticized the Justice Department and the FBI. He has appointed his political allies to key leadership positions in both of these agencies. FBI Director Kash Patel and Attorney General Pam Bondi were present during Friday's event.

During her introductory speech, Ms. Bondi said that "all of us work for the most wonderful president in the history of our country... He will never stop fighting for us, and we will never stop fighting for him and for our country."

During his speech, President Trump promised "historic reforms" in the agencies and said that "under the leadership of the Trump administration, the Department of Justice and the FBI will again become the leading agencies to fight crime around the world."

The speech resembled previous activities, with music playing in the background before President Trump entered the Justice Department's main lobby, and his speech touched on some of his campaign's main themes, including border security and the fight against violent crime.

Regarding crime, President Trump said that murders, property crimes and robberies increased during the administration of former President Biden.

"I have no higher mission as president of the United States than to end these killings and violations of the law and to make America safe again. And that's why you're all here today in this room. We want to protect the Americans and we protect everyone who is in our country," he said./VOA
