Presidential elections in Turkey, Erdogan officially announces his candidacy

The President of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, has officially submitted a request to the Supreme Electoral Council to be registered as a presidential candidate for the upcoming elections.

According to foreign media , representatives of Erdogan's Justice and Development Party arrived at the Council on Tuesday to submit registration documents.

Currently, 18 politicians declared their intention to run for the highest state post. The leader of the main opposition, the Republican People's Party, Kemal Kilicdaroglu is considered to be Erdogan's main competitor.

Representatives of the Justice and Development Party were accompanied by representatives of the Nationalist Movement Party, which operates in alliance with the ruling party.

They stated that both parties decided to nominate Erdogan as the sole candidate and filed all necessary documents with the Supreme Election Council, as required by law.

The presidential elections in Turkey will be held on May 14, simultaneously with the parliamentary elections. To win in the first round, a presidential candidate must secure over 50% of the vote. Otherwise, a second round will take place, in which the two candidates with the highest support will compete against each other.
