The Special Court of Appeal has upheld the security measure of "prison arrest" for the Mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj. The decision was made after reviewing Veliaj's request for a change in security measure, which the trial panel decided to reject, upholding the first instance decision.

In today's session, the Court also reviewed the information presented by the Special Prosecution Office (SPAK) regarding the progress of the investigations into this matter. According to SPAK, 114 investigative actions have been carried out in the last two months related to the criminal file against the mayor.

Veliaj was arrested on February 10 at his office in the Municipality of Tirana, under suspicion of committing the criminal offenses of " Passive corruption of high-ranking state officials or local elected officials ", committed in collaboration in nine cases, as well as "Laundering of the proceeds of a criminal offense or criminal activity".

His wife, Ajola Xoxa, is also under investigation and is currently under "compulsory appearance" security measure.

According to preliminary investigation data, SPAK indicates that Veliaj and his wife have set up and put into operation a structured mechanism, with the aim of irregularly benefiting from public funds administered by the Municipality of Tirana. According to the prosecution, the scheme has operated through camouflaged actions and in violation of the law, bringing financial benefits to the mayor and his family circle.
