The new academic year with only 27 students in exact sciences and empty auditoriums from depopulation!

The University of Tirana, one of the most important higher education institutions in Albania, is ranked in the last 10 places among universities in Southern Europe. Out of 688 educational institutions that have been ranked, that of Tirana is in 677th place, dropping by about 200 places from a year ago.

This academic year, only 27 students have chosen to study in the fields of mathematics, physics and chemistry, in the Faculty of Natural Sciences, this alarming figure and an alarm bell for the degradation of our educational system.

These facts are not a coincidence but a consequence of the failure of reforms in this area, as higher education reflects the real drama of our society, the mass exodus of young people.

Even this year, the number of those sitting in the auditoriums of Public and private Universities in Albania will be lower than in 2022.

Dozens of young men and women would have to sit in the auditorium today, but many of them chose to emigrate, risking their lives and leaving their fate in the hands of some traffickers who play with the misery of Albanians.

The lack of vision of a government that is run by a few schools, has transformed the State Universities into nurseries of corruption where the study and the student are the last in the list of priorities.

It is enough to remember that today the largest budget of our public universities goes to security companies, office furniture, travel, diets and propaganda activities, while scientific research is a forbidden apple. This has caused our universities to rank last in every ranking of authorities in the field in relation to quality.

District universities are about to close, while the University of Tirana at these rates will turn into a diploma kiosk in the Albania of 2030.

Today, the situation of universities is dramatic, it needs vision and strategy to get these centers of knowledge out of the mire of corruption and nepotism.
