EU demands removal of special police and barricades in northern Kosovo - warns meeting of negotiators
EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell called on Serbia and Kosovo to reduce tensions on the ground by immediately withdrawing special police units and removing barricades, while announcing a meeting in Brussels of negotiators on both sides, in the following days.
Mr. Borrell said in a statement that further provocations and actions that are not coordinated are unacceptable and that the leaders of both sides are responsible for any possibility of endangering the security and well-being of communities in both countries.
He reiterated that the talks facilitated by the European Union are the only platform for resolving outstanding issues.
Serbia and Kosovo need to unconditionally de-escalate the situation on the ground. Any further provocations, unilateral or uncoordinated actions are unacceptable.

"The arrival of the heads of the negotiating teams in Brussels in the coming days is a positive first step. It is essential that they come up with a mandate to discuss the way forward and find sustainable solutions that are in the interest of the citizens ", stressed Mr. Borrell, underlining that he expects Kosovo and Serbia to create a favorable environment for reconciliation and regional stability, which is essential for reaching a comprehensive and legally binding agreement to normalize relations between them.
Groups of Serb citizens have been blocking roads to the Kosovo-Serbia border crossing in Jarinje and Brnjak, in the Serb-majority north, for the seventh day in a row, in protest of the Kosovo government's decision to implement the reciprocity measure. with Serbia for car license plates.
The Kosovo authorities have expressed their readiness to lift the reciprocity measure if Serbia vows to do the same for cars with Kosovo license plates traveling through Serbia.
I spoke to @avucic of #Serbia & @albinkurti of #Kosovo about the need to de-escalate in the north of Kosovo. It's vital both Belgrade & Pristina show restraint & return to dialogue. @NATO_KFOR’s mandate remains to ensure a safe & secure environment & freedom of movement for all.

The situation in the North needs deescalation. I urge both sides to talk to each other instead about each other. Best way forward: Meet in Brussels to find a way out as soon as possible
— Ambassador Jörn Rohde (@GermanAmbKOS) September 26, 2021
The calls for content were joined by the German Ambassador to Pristina Jorn Rohde, who in a post on social networks said that the situation in the north should be calmed down, while calling on the parties to speak, as he said, with each other, instead of talk about each other./VOA
