File 5D, Teliti: Veliaj refuses to set up an international audit

The vice president of the Municipal Council of Tirana, Dorjan Teliti, in a statement to the media, said that Erion Veliaj rejected the request of the opposition councilors to set up an international audit group on the "5D" file.

Teliti said that the opposition councilors will not surrender as no one can prevent them from carrying out their duties with transparency.

"Yesterday, at 17.00, we had the first reaction from the majority, which finally called the Presidency of the Municipal Council of Tirana to a meeting. You will ask: what happened in the meeting, what conclusion did you draw? The answer is simple, we received a single orphaned YES and many repeated NOs from the representatives of Veliaj in the Presidency of the Municipal Council.

In this extended meeting of the Presidency, where after my request in the capacity of the Vice-President of the Council, I asked to invite the heads of groups of councilors to this meeting, a request which, for the sake of truth, found support from the socialist majority, from that moment onwards , although not at all surprised, we were faced with a long and repeated series of "NO, NO and only NO" for every request filed by opposition councilors during the last few weeks.

They said NO to the request for an extraordinary/extraordinary meeting of the City Council to call the Mayor and address, debate and present evidence on the 5D affair. It is clear that they are afraid to face the bitter truths.

They said NO to the establishment of a temporary commission with a "quasi-investigative" character to investigate which links have given in and allowed the abuse of the municipal budget funds. Obviously they don't want transparency. They said NO to the request for contracting a foreign audit on the municipality's income and expenses.

They said NO again, for the umpteenth time, to the establishment of the 4-year Permanent Financial Control Commission, this legal obligation and of the Internal Regulation of the Council itself, specifically article 36 as also given in the monitor, continuing to be in violation of the regulation for the 10th consecutive month from the day of the constitution of this Council in June 2023. It is clear that they do not want to know about the law or anything else.

However, we opposition councilors do not give up. "No one can prevent us from carrying out our duty for transparency and fair and legal use of every penny of funds and public resources ," said Teliti.
