Nile fever, PHI: 11 deaths in Albania, 79 infected

The number of people infected with West Nile fever has reached 79, while 11 others have lost their lives. The head of the Public Health Institute, Eugena Tomini, told RTSH that the situation is under control and that the map of infections includes several cities.

"This season also makes the flow lower, while the occurrence of cases has also been less. I emphasize that we have a touch of 79 cases and in the meantime we have had about 40 suspected cases. The loss of life has also been present, mainly the affected age group is over 60 years old", said Tomini.

The disinfection process continues to be carried out in the areas identified by the municipalities as problematic, but as long as we have the "Culex pipiens" mosquito in circulation and at these temperatures we may have other infections.

"In areas such as Lushnjë, Fieri, Berati, Elbasani, Tirana, Lezha, Kurbini, they have had a close cooperation with the recommendations of the PIH to minimize the habitats in which these mosquitoes develop. The medical structures are on alert, evaluating each case with the first signs and then to be managed", said Tomini.

According to ISHP, the situation continues to be dynamically monitored at all levels. They emphasize that there is no place for panic as 80% of those affected pass without symptoms, 19% with mild symptoms and only 1 person has serious complications, mainly over 65 years of age.
