The Commissioner for Protection from Discrimination has launched an investigation into discrimination against journalist Ilir Yzeiri.

In a statement, the Commissioner explains that this investigation comes after a derogatory article that Yzeiri wrote about Judge Engert Pëllumbi. In the statement, the Commission calls on the media to uphold the Code of Ethics and implement the legal framework that protects human dignity.

"The Commissioner for Protection from Discrimination was notified through the media and alerted to the allegation of the public use of inappropriate language with a derogatory connotation, towards a judge of the Special Court of Appeal, by journalist IY."


The Commissioner for Protection from Discrimination, following incitement on social media platforms, has ordered the launch of an ex-officio investigation into these allegations and will pursue the case according to all legal provisions.

Overstepping freedom of expression, through the use of discriminatory language in online media and social media platforms, with high resonance in society, does not help in the development of a constructive and reasonable debate in our society.

Hate speech is any form of public expression, by any means, of promotion, incitement to denigration, hatred or defamation, any harassment, insult, negative stereotype, stigmatization or threat against a person or group of persons, as well as any justification of all forms of expression based on grounds of discrimination. (Law No. 10 221/2010).

"The Commissioner for Protection from Discrimination invites publishers and online media managers to uphold the code of ethics in the media and implement the legal framework that protects human dignity in our country," the announcement states. 

In connection with the denigrating article against Judge Pëllumbi, Diaspora for a Free Albania also filed a criminal complaint against Ilir Yzeiri a few days ago.
