Integration/Varhelyi: EU is giving additional funds to the countries of the

The EU Enlargement Commissioner, Oliver Varhelyi, has stated that the EU is providing additional funds to the countries of the Western Balkans to help implement all the reforms needed for integration.

In a joint conference with Prime Minister Edi Rama in Tirana, Varhelyi said that the EU is increasing funds with 6 million euros to the countries of the Balkan region to help all reforms be carried out, because they have financial costs.

So, he set the condition that after 2027 the countries of the region can no longer say that 'we are not ready'.

VarhelyiPeople should see the innovations of this plan. I think that this time we have the opportunity to show the direct economic benefits of a state that becomes a member country. What is important is the element that your region can become part of the integration even faster.

We are not negotiating in abstract terms. These countries are applying the rules today so that when they reach membership they will be in order. It would be unfair for us to ask our Western Balkan partners to participate in the common market, where they have less opportunity to compete. For this reason, we are giving additional funds to help all reforms to be carried out, because they have a financial cost.

We are ready to facilitate this work. EU leaders have already decided that 6 billion euros will have to help the region. Until 2017, the region will have the same level of aid intensity. This means that after 2027 the countries of the region can no longer say that we are not ready.
