Argument with hard objects at a residence in Lundë, one person is suspected of being injured
By Jerina Zaloshnja, Rakipi — Reporting from the Vatican
In 1967, a Catholic priest in Tirana, whose name I never learned, came quietly to our home to baptize me. He was only two years old, born to Bektashi parents on my father's side and Muslim on my mother's side, who, despite the risk, did not deny Aunt Ana's (the Italian lady from Barletta, Italy, who helped raise me) wish that their daughter be baptized in the Catholic faith. It was a time of deep fear, just before the communist regime, following the model of China's Cultural Revolution, banned religion, destroyed churches, and attempted to wipe out the faith itself.
A few months before that darkness descended, I became a Catholic child, thanks to a gentle priest and my unforgettable father, Mrs. Ana Sopoti. She taught me how to pray at night before going to bed, how to make the sign of the cross and thank God silently at the table, at Sunday lunches. Without delay, with all the time in the world and unperturbed by my mother's complaints that he was taking too much care of me and had "depended" on others, my father from Bari, "my salvation", would take me by the hand on some magical imaginary journeys, to the Vatican Square, to San Pietro where I would wave my little hands to greet the Pope. Say "Ciao Papa" my honey-face instructed me. Ciao! I imitated him. These were my first meetings with the Pope. Who exactly this Pope was, I do not know.
Years later, when I finally set foot in the real Vatican, in 2003, with painful memories in my heart of my father who, after meeting thousands of times in silence and clandestinely with the Pope from communist Tirana, finally embraced God himself in Italy, everything seemed strangely familiar to me, as if I had already walked there hundreds of times.
Today, however, I am here no longer as that little girl, but as a journalist. I report, not dream. I report on the final farewell of Pope Francis, whose warm, gentle smile I have seen every Sunday for the past ten years.
Today is a solemn day. Thousands of pilgrims, heads of state, and ordinary people have gathered to bow their heads before the Pope for the last time.
A Special Connection to Albania
In Albania, Pope Francis holds a special place in history. His visit on September 21, 2014, his first trip to Europe as Pope, was a powerful testimony of hope and interfaith harmony.
The streets of Tirana that day were filled with hundreds of thousands of Albanians, Christians and Muslims together, waving flags, smiling and crying with joy.
Standing proudly in Mother Teresa Square, Pope Francis exclaimed: "Mother Teresa is a great daughter of these lands. Peace in your homes!"
I will never forget the voice of Cardinal Pietro Parolin resounding in the square:
"May the eagle on your flag always keep hope in God."
A Spirit that never dies
When the ceremony ended, a deep silence fell over St. Peter's Square. Slowly, thousands of people left, leaving Pope Francis to rest in a private ceremony in the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore.
But somehow his spirit did not leave, it remained unburied.
It seems as if it remained lost in smiles, in prayers, in dreams of bridges built instead of walls.
Today, as I leave St. Peter's Basilica, one thing is clear:
For Albanians, for Catholics, for the entire world, Pope Francis will always remain the Pope who smiled at us.
The Pope who believed that goodness is stronger than hatred.
The Pope who left us not just a memory but a way forward.
Something else is clear to me. There were two women from my family who accompanied our beloved Pope with love and sorrow in their hearts to St. Peter's Square. On one side, I raised both hands and shouted as loud as I could, at the top of my voice, "Ciao Papa!"
From the other side of the sky, my father. Through all this sun, through that beyond, I can make out her hands, twisted by rheumatism, but very, very alive. It's exactly her! How hard those hands waved, my Ana! How hard, how much she welcomed our Pope!
"With all this love in the company, the Pope will not die," two believers shout in the square, next to me.
"But my father didn't die either, he's just a little old," I added.
