Greek media: Beleri loses his oath, but not his MEP mandate

The well-known Greek media, Ekathimerini writes that the elected mayor of Himara, Fredi Beleri, may not participate in his oath as a member of the European Parliament.

According to her, the European Parliament will hold its first session on July 16, in which the newly elected MEPs are expected to be present.

But despite his stay in prison, Fredi Beleri will have no obstacles for taking office. This is because the oath in the European Parliament is not a prerequisite for the ratification of his legal election.

In his comments for Skai TV, Fredi Beleri said that 'the only fair decision would be his release', adding that he has no illusions about the Albanian justice system. "I know that the judicial system in Albania is controlled by Prime Minister Edi Rama ," Beleri said regarding his case, which has strained Greek-Albanian relations.

Greece has repeatedly emphasized that the Beleri case is a violation of the rule of law and has warned that it could block Albania's aspirations to the European Union.

Greek Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis conveyed Greece's message to the Southeast European Cooperation Process summit in Skopje, emphasizing that respect for international law and good neighborly relations is a necessary condition for EU membership.

"Continued dialogue, refraining from divisive rhetoric and unilateral actions, as well as the implementation of international agreements are essential for finding a sustainable way forward and guaranteeing stability, security and prosperity in our region," said Gerapetritis.
