"We are following the investigations", the European Commission reacts

The European Commission has reacted to the issue of the arrest and imprisonment of Fredi Beler, the mayor of Himara.

A spokesperson for the European Commission told Alice Taylor, the author of "Inside Albania" in Euronews Albania, that they cannot comment on the development of the ongoing investigations.

The spokesman claimed that they are aware of the case.

"We continue to follow the developments. We cannot comment on the following investigations and request that the continuity of the process be ensured," said the spokesperson of the Commission.

As for the local elections, they stated that "cases of misuse of public resources at the national and local level, allegations of pressure on voters and administration employees and in particular vote buying, are disturbing and should be investigated accordingly."

The European Commission added that the political parties should engage in a dialogue and "address all recommendations of the OSCE/ODIHR and the Venice Commission."

Fredi Beleri has denied all the accusations against him for buying and selling votes. The Central Election Commission gave him the mandate of the mayor of Himara on Friday.

Beleri was arrested two days before the elections. His case brought harsh reactions from Greece, which immediately took action and demanded Beler's release. Foreign Minister Olta Xhaçka said after the meeting with her Greek counterpart Nikos Dendias, that Beleri will be treated the same as any Albanian citizen.
