The agreement between the Albanian government and the Alabbar company for the implementation of the Durres Port project, where luxury apartments and hotels are expected to be built, has sparked debates among political forces.

Recently, the former Minister of the Interior, Sandër Lleshaj, commented on the project in question. For 'Panorama.al', Lleshaj says that the relocation of the port should have happened long ago, since where it is currently located it could not perform the functions of a modern regional port.

Asked whether or not it is a strategic project, Lleshaj says that the port should be built with the vision of one of the most important ports in the region.

"The relocation of the port should have happened in the meantime, since where it is, it cannot perform the functions of a modern regional port. I reiterate that the port should be built in another country with the vision of one of the most important ports in the region. This should be the real strategic project of Albania, as defined by the National Security Strategy. While this other project with a tourist port, hotels and residences remains only a development project", says Lleshaj.

The former minister estimates that Durrës does not need to be the "Dubai of the Mediterranean", while regarding the accusations of the inclusion of illegal money in the project, he requests the analysis of the competent bodies.

"Durrës has so much historical, cultural and historical radiation that it is not only enough, but also too much. In this sense, it does not need to be a "Dubai with the Mediterranean", but only Durrës. Durrës, which, although still underground, has the grace of an eternal city. As for the allusions to the crime related to this project, I think they should be verified by bodies that have legal and professional competence. While for the public it is worth the call to analyze their authors, who in many cases have stood out as dangerous public intoxicants", says Lleshaj.
