Italian government declares 5 days of mourning for Pope Francis' death

The Italian government declared five days of national mourning for the death of Pope Francis, as decided by the Council of Ministers at its meeting this Tuesday.

This decision takes effect immediately and will last until Saturday, April 26, the day of the Pope's funeral.

The Vatican announced earlier today the details of the Pope's funeral ceremony, following a meeting of cardinals.

The funeral will be held on Saturday, April 27, at 10 a.m. (Italian time), marking the beginning of a nine-day period of mourning. The burial ceremony will take place in the open air, in front of St. Peter's Basilica.

The funeral ceremony will be presided over by the Dean of the College of Cardinals, Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re. At the end of the service, Cardinal Re will give the last prayer – the final prayer with which the deceased Pope is formally surrendered to God – and immediately afterwards, the body will be transported for burial to Santa Maria Maggiore.

According to Sky News, after this period of mourning ends, the conclave - the official process of electing the new Pope - will begin, which will begin in May.

At the same time, the Vatican confirmed that the Pope's body will be transferred tomorrow morning, starting at 9 a.m., to St. Peter's Basilica for public worship, which will last until Friday.
