Albania is elected a member of the UN Security Council

Albania is elected a temporary member of the UN Security Council.

Our Eastern European candidate country received 175 votes from 190 UN member states.

The UN Security Council is one of the most important organs of the United Nations, tasked with maintaining peace and security between nations.

The decisions of this body are called resolutions and are binding. The Security Council held its first meeting in January 1946. The Security Council may also use force in armed conflict, but all permanent members must agree.

There are two types of states in the Security Council: 5 permanent member states and 10 elected states. The US, France, the UK, China and Russia are permanent member states. The 10 elected states have seats in the SC for a 2-year term. One of these 10 countries should be from Eastern Europe, part of which is Kosovo and Albania according to the UN.
