Singles are increasing in Albania, this is how their number is going

The transition of the last decades changed, among other things, the lifestyle and the concept of the family for Albanians. Over the years, the number of unmarried people has been increasing.

According to the latest data from the population census in Albania, there are over 300,000 single people, while men dominate.

For Albanians, creating a family has always been considered an important decision that was once taken at a young age, but the reality changed like in any other developed society.

"I got married at 25 years old, it is a normal age of maturity to make a decision that will affect your whole life", said a citizen.

"They fall short, cohabitation and that's it, but it's unfortunate that there is no birth. I have been married for 45 years. Harmony and tolerance is always the secret", said another citizen.

Citizens with single status belong to the productive age group from 25 to 59 years old. But what circumstances have influenced?

Arjana Muçaj, sociologist, said: "What we call youth education, migration and emigration has increased. These are the two key factors."

More and more men have turned to emigration to work. And this delays the marriage. While the opposite happens with girls who prefer to be educated. But this has led to a lack of education, preventing men from finding a life partner.

"Finding a partner means being similar in quality and characteristics and in terms of social status in society, and definitely the claims are always higher."

Among girls, the highest number of single women belongs to the age group of 25-30 years.

"This shows that girls are getting married at an older age than before, age 22 25 marriage was seen as something that happened after their schooling. We look at women's economic independence".

According to the sociologist, the demographic transition, the displacement of the population after the 90s in low-lying and urban areas have also influenced the increase of mostly single men in the villages.
