Who certifies the truth in Albania?

Who certifies the truth in Albania?

Dom Gjergj Meta/ Panorama

The writing is not intended to deal either with rit veritas revelata (religious truth) or with veritas philosophica (truth as a process of knowing reason), but with veritas juridica (legal truth) of things (accusations more precisely) that every day are articulated strongly and violently through our virtual, visual and print media. Who certifies them? Which instance gives us the objective criteria and the right instruments for us to understand what is true and what is not in the (almost) total absence of the justice system?

And yet, we cannot detach ourselves, at least for a few moments, from the philosophical journey of truth to talk about what is legal truth, because somewhere they meet. Greek Aletheia was originally the overlap between thought and reality (Aristotle), what in the Middle Ages was called adaequatio intellectus ad rem in the philosophy of St. Thomas Aquinas. In the history of thought, we have a long journey that has included the concept of truth, with the most varied nuances, to reach our time, where truth has lost almost any objectivity, any coincidence between thought and reality, being in available to the individual and his perception or even worse, available to the powers of electoral propaganda to gain power. This has brought, in my opinion, that in the Oxford dictionary for 2016 the word of the year was the word post-truth, which indicates the situation, according to which, in a discussion, which is related to a fact or news, the truth is an issue that has secondary importance. The greatest importance is given to the influence that it will have on the will of those who listen, in order to orient its vote. Here, however, we also enter into the dimension of the dignity of the human person, which is sometimes measured with the production box and somewhere with the ballot paper and when it is neither for one nor the other, it is simply a remnant, but it is a separate issue. The public discussion in Albania, that of TV studios or the inter-party jungle, is exactly in this state, in the post-truth situation, where it does not matter how true a thing is and how it relates to the truth. What matters is that those who listen immediately form an opinion that leads water into the mill of the one who raises his voice the most. Simply the truth no longer matters. If there is any interest in it, it is fully functional.

We have been hearing accusations and counter-accusations against each other for years, even at the highest levels of the Albanian state. These are accusations that usually make you shudder. Many of the accusations are not moral or philosophical and thus the tribune that evaluates these accusations is not the auditors of opinion. We as citizens do not have another objective evaluation criterion (outside our individual perception) except what the law enforcement bodies and the courts tell us, which, through a correct process, lead to the legal truth expressed by a decision, which will pass all the stages. (if the parties so request) to the Constitutional Court. But, so far, and time has come, the links that should sanction legal truth are disintegrated and insufficient to make the truth. On the one hand, if by political actors and the people themselves, the judicial system has been completely delegitimized, on the other hand, we have entered a process that is delaying the re-establishment of this system. Post-truth in our country has exactly this special compared to other countries because it has included the inclusive: the justice system and opposes it.

We are facing every day, every hour, and every moment a new charge and a new counter-accusation. No one seems to be aiming for the truth, but only influencing the individual or groups to achieve a result in the next election. Are we able to see what catastrophic situation we are in? Justitia et veritas is no longer related to each other, they are even left in silence, on a spare bench, like tired players of a battle that is being done only to increase the number of fans, where they do not interest anyone. It does not matter if the players on the field play well or badly, are professionals or just clowns. It is important to cause the intended effect calculated and desired on the spectators.

A kind of modern panem et circenses (bread and circus). The lack of a tribune where these "truths", loudly shouted by current actors, come out, is problematic. Delays in Justice Reform have, in my opinion, only one name: denial of justice. That regula turis is right, which says iustitia dilata, iustitia negata (delayed justice is denied justice). How much can people who have spent years of life and energy wait for truth, for a decision, for justice?

The question of who certifies the truth of what is being said today in Albania, which instance, is more urgent than ever. One cannot live in chaos like the present one. A good part of the people expects it from the next ambassadors, who, in "respect" of the international codes, rightly say: "The constitutional bodies have it in their hands. "Without these, we can say nothing."

To leave your truth in the hands of the internationals means to leave it in the hands of diplomacy, which in its history has never dealt with the truth, but only with the delivery of the word. The ambassador is just news. Only in countries like Albania are they given the title of the arbitrator. We invented the IOM, which is the clearest institution of our incompetence, servility, and distrust of ourselves and each other. This shows not only the strength of the states that have their chancelleries here, but also our extreme weakness. We are increasingly losing the battle for truth because we probably never loved this battle. But the truth never loses the battle with us.

It has objectivity of its own, that we, no matter how much we ignore or ignore, will always get in our way, because it is in the nature of truth itself to be objective. Whoever hinders nature, sooner or later will be taken forward by it. Nature does not forgive. And nature for only its definition is not a jungle, but it is finality: i.e., it has a journey of its own towards a goal. No matter how hard you try, she will one day come out on top.
