Is J Balvin's career nearing its end?

J Balvin is considered one of the leading artists bringing forth the new generation of reggaeton singers who expanded the global reach of urban Latin music, alongside giants of the genre such as Bad Bunny, Nicky Jam and Ozuna. After a string of massive hit hits like "Mi Gente" and "I Like It," the Colombian artist recently told NBC News that his main focus these days is being a father to his 1-year-old son, Rio.

"I'll take my time to leave music later. I'm really focused on my first child. My child makes me want to be a better person."

José Álvaro Osorio Balvin, artistically known as J Balvin, was born and raised in Medellín, Colombia. With dreams of becoming a rapper, 17-year-old Balvin sought out Colombia's then-underground hip-hop and reggaeton scene. After several MySpace music campaigns and local performances, Balvin was signed to the Universal record label in 2013.

His breakthrough came the following year with the song "6 AM", featuring Puerto Rican rapper Farruko. The song reached number two on the Billboard Hot Latin Songs chart, followed by the hits "Ay Vamos" and "Ginza". Balvin's mainstream success reached new heights in 2018 with the release of his album Vibras. He combined different musical sounds, from romantic reggaeton styles to dancehall rhythms. His most recent collaboration "Nivel de Perreo", along with singer Ryan Castro, was released in June.

"The fact that I'm Latino. It's just in my blood. The opportunity to help our people, it's really nice and I'm happy to do it. Since becoming a father, his outlook on life has changed. I'm thinking about how to give back. I'm focused on how to help my community give back. Kids make you humble and make you wonder how you can be better. That's when it all makes sense."
