American basketball player arrested in Russia / Wife breaks silence, makes

The wife of the arrested basketball player of the National Women's Basketball Association (NBA), Brittney Griner, has asked US President Joe Biden to help her leave Russia, where she has been detained for several months.

Griner was arrested at a Moscow airport on February 17 when a search of her luggage allegedly revealed several cannabis oil cartridges and she faces up to 10 years in prison. The U.S. State Department determined this month that Griner had been wrongly arrested and has appointed diplomats to work for her release.

Excited Cherelle Griner, speaking publicly about banning her wife for the first time, urged Biden to do everything she can to bring Brittney home.

"I just hear he's in power. She's a political hostage," Cherelle Griner said in an interview with ABC News' "Good Morning America."

"So if they keep it because they want you to do something, then I want you to do it."

Griner's arrest at Moscow's Sheremetyevo Airport came after diplomatic relations between Washington and Moscow deteriorated after the Russian occupation of Ukraine. The Russian customs service said at the time that the alleged violation could lead to a sentence of five to 10 years in prison for Griner, who for years played for a Russian professional team during the jashtëNBA off-season.
