Actor Alec Baldwin has expressed his shock and sadness after he shot to death filmmaker Halyna Hutchins with a gun while shooting a movie in New Mexico.

He wrote on Twitter that she was in contact with her husband and had offered support.

"My heart is broken for her husband, their son and all those who knew and loved Halyna, " he wrote.

Ms. Hutchins, 42, was shot on Western Rust footage while working as a director of photography.

"There are no words to convey my shock and grief over the tragic accident that took the life of Halyna Hutchins, a woman, mother and our much admired colleague," he wrote on Twitter.

"I am fully cooperating with the police investigation to address how this tragedy happened."

Hutchins was taken to hospital by helicopter after the shooting Thursday afternoon, but did not survive. Director Joel Souza, 48, was also injured and fled the scene at Bonanza Creek Ranch by ambulance.

Local media reported that Baldwin was seen outside the Santa Fe county sheriff's office in tears.
