Why does Generation Z have difficulty sleeping peacefully?

More than a third of Americans can't sleep soundly, and according to a new study, Generation Z has it harder than others.

An exclusive survey conducted for Newsweek by Talker Research analyzed sleep habits, revealing that 38% of respondents use white noise or other sounds to help them sleep.

The survey, conducted between November 2 and 6, 2024, surveyed 1,000 Americans and found that in terms of generations, Gen Z made up the highest percentage of white noise users, with almost half of them (49%) using these sounds to sleep.

They are followed by Generation Y (41%) and Generation X (40%), while baby boomers were least likely to use voice aids for sleep (32%).

Chelsea Perry, certified Sleep Medicine expert and owner of Sleep Solutions, provided an explanation for this phenomenon.

“White noise can be a powerful sleep aid, especially for Gen Z, who are often immersed in a digital environment where quiet is rare,” Perry told Newsweek. “It works by masking background sounds that can be disruptive and creates a consistent sound environment that the brain finds relaxing.”

According to Perry, the use of white noise by this generation is linked to high exposure to screens and constant digital stimulation.

"For Gen Z in particular, white noise addiction may come from high exposure to electronic devices and constant stimulation. Their minds may be more conditioned to seek out a soft form of sound as a cue to relax," she said.

"Using white noise can provide a smooth transition, helping to neutralize overstimulation from phones and other devices."/Talker News
