Serbs protest in North Mitrovica against the opening of the bridge over the Iber
In North Mitrovica, near the main bridge over the river Ibër, members of the Serbian community protested, who opposed its opening for vehicle traffic.
"On the bridge we defended survival, now we defend extinction", "If Kurti opens the bridge, KFOR and QUINT will be responsible", "While the EU and the USA are writing statements, they are expelling us" , were some of the messages seen on the protesters' banners in North Mitrovica.
The bridge over the river Ibër separates the Albanian-majority South Mitrovica and the Serb-majority North Mitrovica, and the Government of Kosovo, despite the opposition of the international community, has said that it intends to open it for the movement of vehicles.
During the protest, the former judge from North Mitrovica, Nikola Kabashiq, said that a consensus must be reached between all the representatives of the Serbs in Kosovo to identify and protect the basic interests of the Serbian community.
"Misery is our collective problem. We are attacked as a people, we are under aggression to leave Kosovo", said Kabashiq.
As a form of pressure, the members of the Serbian community mentioned the efforts of the Albin Kurti Government to establish authority in the north of Kosovo, as well as the presence of members of the special units of the Kosovo Police.
Kabashiq emphasized that the protest was not against the Albanian people, but against the Government of Prime Minister Albin Kurti.
Speaking about the intention of the Government of Kosovo to open the bridge over the Ibar, Kabashiq said that the Serbian community does not want this, while adding that the claims of the Kosovar authorities that this would be done for peace and coexistence are not correct.
"We don't feel safe here," he said, adding that there is freedom of movement even though the bridge is not open to traffic.
According to him, the bridge can be opened only if the parties agree within the dialogue on the normalization of relations and when the situation is normalized.
In this context, he demanded that the members of the special units of the Kosovo Police withdraw from the north of Kosovo and that the representatives of the Serbian community take over the leadership of the local government.
Meanwhile, Ivan Millojević, director of the Post of Serbia in Kosovo, said that he expects that in the coming days the branches of this post will also be closed south of Ibri, adding that the Serbs should oppose the Kosovo authorities "with dignity".
On August 5, Kosovo authorities closed nine facilities of the Post of Serbia in northern Kosovo, after arguing that they were operating without a license. The action was criticized by the international community.
Milojevic said that the employees of the Post of Serbia are being accused by the Kosovar authorities of money laundering.
He emphasized that the local authorities in South Mitrovica must also agree with this decision.
The Serbs in the north at the end of 2022, on the initiative of the Serbian List, resigned from the institutions of Kosovo due to the decision of the Government of Kosovo that the car plates, issued by Serbia, should be replaced with RKS - Republic of Kosovo plates.
The Serbs also boycotted the elections of April last year, votes from which the Albanian mayors of four municipalities in the north came to power.
After the pressure of the international community, the Government of Kosovo organized on April 21 of this year the vote for the dismissal of the presidents in the north, but the Serbs boycotted the process after the call of the Serbian List for a boycott. The Serbian List had argued that the voter lists "do not reflect the real situation on the ground" and that the number of Albanians on the voter lists "has increased".
In recent months, the authorities in Kosovo have taken several decisions, such as the decision to ban the use of the Serbian dinar for making cash payments, they have started the closure of Serbian institutions in Kosovo, and they have confiscated properties that are owned by the Kosovo Agency. of Privatization./ REL
