European Parliament President David Sassoli described as a mistake the decision of the European Council last week not to launch the accession negotiations with Albania and North Macedonia. Speaking from Florence, where he was receiving an award from this city, Sassoli said that the Western Balkan’s accession into the European Union (EU) would render the common European space safer. In related news, Sassoli announced that the EP would vote on a resolution on North Macedonia and Albania on Thursday this week.

As confirmed by him, the EP will debate the European Council’s conclusions on enlargement with Northern Macedonia and Albania and, in conclusion, it will pass a resolution on the same. Newspapers also called attention to the comments of EU High Representative Federica Mogherini in her blog about the latest developments in the EU. “The heads of State and government have postponed the decision to open negotiations for Albania’s and North Macedonia’s accession to the European Union, in spite of the extraordinary progress achieved by both countries and against the European Commission’s advice. It is much more than a lost opportunity: it is a historic mistake, which I hope can be amended as soon as possible,” Mogherini wrote.
