EP Rapporteur: Kosovo Crucial Issue for Serbia’s Euro-Integration

Slovenian parliamentarian Vladimir Bilcik, who has taken over the office of the European Parliament’s rapporteur for Serbia in the new make-up of that body in place of David McAllister, said for N1 TV that Kosovo was the crucial issue for Serbia’s Euro-integration.

“My first priority will be to speak with the parliamentarians in the European Parliament about what has been done so far to help Serbia on its path towards the EU, but I will also go to Belgrade soon where I will also organize meetings. I want to be a constructive voice which supports the ambitions of Serbia, but also a fair and open voice surrounding the tasks which are necessary to carry out so that we could push forward the matter of enlargement”, he said.

Bilcik openly says that Kosovo was, is and will remain the crucial issue for Serbia’s Euro-integration.

“Therefore I do say that we need progress, we need to unlock the negotiations between Belgrade and Pristina”, he said.

To the question of whether this was possible at all at this moment, Bilcik said: “If the EU enlargement is the final goal, then it has to be possible”.

Bilcik called the decision not to open negotiations on membership with North Macedonia and Albanian “a historic mistake”, but he is an optimist that the Euro-parliamentarians will succeed to neutralize the negative effect which such a decision could have for the region.

“I believe that the EU and member countries have partially undermined their own credibility. The damage has been done and now we have to fix it. There are numerous voices in the EU who support enlargement and who understand the matter of credibility and I hope that we can reverse matters. The only credible, secure, prosperous and politically reliable future of the Western Balkans is the one which leads towards membership in the EU. This is the European future on which we have to work”, he concluded.
