EU, US and Britain Call on Kosovo Parties to Form Government Quickly

European Union envoys in Pristina issued a joint statement on Thursday calling for the quick forming of a new Kosovo government, N1 reported.

The statement by the Head of the EU Office/EU Special Representative, EULEX and Heads of EU Missions in Kosovo expressed the belief that a consensus would be reached to resolve remaining challenges.

“The constitutive session of the Assembly has been scheduled to take place on 26 December. The general elections of 6 October gave the opportunity to the people of Kosovo to exercise their democratic right to vote and elect their leaders. This is the essence of the democratic process. We trust that the parties concerned will reach the necessary consensus to overcome remaining challenges,” the Kosovo state TV RTK quoted the statement.

“A swift government formation is needed to take forward these processes, in the interest of Kosovo and its people and in line with the constitution and the expressed wish of the electorate,” the statement said.

Embassies of the United States and Great Britain join in

The Embassies of the United States and Great Britain in Kosovo called for the formation of the new government of Kosovo resulting from the early parliamentary elections held on 6 October, agencies reported.

They agreed with the request of the head of the EU Office in Kosovo Nataliya Apostolova who asked for the formation of the Kosovo government and they pointed out that citizens were waiting anxiously for the new government to be formed and promised changes to be implemented.

“We agree with EU: the people of Kosovo are eager to have a new government that will bring positive change”, the statement of the US Embassy reads.

The British Embassy released a similar statement saying they supported the request of Apostolova, the head of EULEX and heads of the EU missions in Kosovo.

Representatives of the winning parties, Self-Determination, and LDK, have not yet agreed on a coalition agreement for the formation of the Kosovo government. The main problem is a request of LDK that this party should have the office of the president of Kosovo, something that Self-Determination does not agree with.
