Former British Ambassador Claims Serbian Secret Police Chief was CIA Agent

The former British Ambassador in Belgrade Sir Ivor Roberts told the international war crimes tribunal in the Hague that former Serbian State Security Service (RDB) chief Jovica Stanisic was “a covert agent for the CIA”.

Sir Ivor was testifying at Stanisic’s trial for war crimes committed against non-Serbs in Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina as a defense witness. He said that the claims he made in his book Conversations With Milosevic that Stanisic worked for the CIA were reliable.

Asked by prosecutor Douglas Stringer about the basis for that information, Roberts replied that the British government “did not allow him to speak about those things” and the was recently warned not to violate the official secrets act.

He refused to answer a number of questions saying he was not allowed to under British law.

A former associate says Stanisic did not work for the CIA: Stanisic did not work for the CIA, he did cooperate with the American agency in a professional capacity, defense witness and former high-ranking RDB officer Vlado Dragicevic said at the trial.

“I can swear that I never signed a single document on cooperation with the CIA,” Dragicevic said. He headed the RDB international cooperation department in the 1990s.

Asked to explain the nature of relations between Stanisic and the CIA resident in Belgrade from 1992 onwards, Dragicevic said: “It was solely professional. It was a real professional relationship.”

Dragicevic said the was present at all of Stanisic’s meetings with the CIA resident, adding that it was a relationship in which Stanisic appeared as the representative of one service towards another service and exchanged the information that he was empowered to.

“An agent does not have the authority to hand over information, money or other things on his own… That is called treason in some places," Dragicevic said.

He described Stanisic’s cooperation with the CIA as an exchange of information beneficial to both sides.
