German newspaper keeps publishing intercepted phone calls allegedly involving PM

German newspaper Bild published on Wednesday ten intercepted phone calls that allegedly belong to Serious Crimes prosecutors’ case file no. 184 related to the mayoral by-election in Dibra Municipality.

Reportedly, the phone calls feature conversations between former Minister of Infrastructure and Energy Damian Gjiknuri, who was the Socialist Party (SP) official assigned to organizing the campaign for the said by-election, former Minister of Interior Saimir Tahiri, Chief of Dibra Police Robert Aga, Socialist Party MPs Ulsi Manja and Xhemal Qefalia, and MP Reme Lala’s father Imer Lala, who has been labelled by the opposition as the Dibra strongman.

According to the German newspaper, the intercepted phone calls are an example of the collusion between senior politicians of the ruling SP, mafia bosses, police officers and senior civil servants to rig the mayoral by-election. Reacting to the publication of these intercepted phone calls, Democratic Party Chair Lulzim Basha said over Facebook that “Edi Rama is a crime godfather. There are no alibis left anymore. His and his gang’s ousting from power is now a national mission.”
