IDM survey 'Trust in Governance 2019': Only 40% of Albanians have

Print and electronic media reported on the findings of the Trust in Governance 2019 survey conducted by the Institute for Democracy and Mediation. The findings show the low confidence of the Albanian citizens in their state institutions and political bodies, as well as waning trust in the justice system reform. Citizens interviewed for the survey said they no longer trust in the integrity and honesty of public officials and Albanian politicians.

Only 40% of the respondents have still confidence in the justice system reform. The rest believes that the reform is being conducted formally, and is being used by those in power to have in the judiciary people who serve them. 85% of the respondents believe that low- and high-level corruption is pervasive, and six out of ten respondents do not believe that the low-level corruption is punished, whereas in the case of high-level corruption there are seven out of ten respondents who do not believe in its punishment by the law enforcement. According to the respondents, most corrupt institutions are the judiciary, the health care services, and the government, being followed by the parliament, the police, and the municipalities.

One out of two Albanians wants to leave the country. Over 60% of the Albanian people believe that the courts’ agenda is being set by political interests while seeing the Prosecution as highly affected by political interests. As shown by the survey, also the print and electronic media are less trusted by the Albanian people. Most respondents of all demographic groups said that they do not believe that the media are publishing accurate information. The institutions that still enjoy the people’s trust as per the survey are the religious bodies (65.6%) and the Armed Forces (59.4%).
