Kosovo PM: Tariffs on Serbian Goods to be Replaced With Full Trade Reciprocity

The 100 percent tariffs on goods from Serbia will be replaced with full trade reciprocity as with any other state, Kosovo Prime Minister AlbinKurti said on Wednesday, electronic media reported.

He said that Economy, Labor, Trade and Industry Minister RozetaHajdari has taken certain steps towards revoking the tariffs and establishing full reciprocity with Serbia, adding that a working group has been formed to determine all trade barriers with Serbia and make recommendations to the government.

Kurti said that as soon as those recommendations reach his cabinet, they will be analyzed and a decision will be taken to revoke the tariffs and establish reciprocity.

He said that goods produced in Kosovo which are subject to disloyal practices and competition will be protected. The reciprocity principle that the government is to decide on will be based on the principles of the World Trade Organization and CEFTA, he said.

The US and European Union have called the Kosovo authorities to revoke the tariffs. Serbia has set that as a condition to continue the negotiations to normalize relations. The tariffs were imposed in the second half of November 2018.

The US president’s special envoy for Kosovo Ambassador Richard Grenell said that he does not support the reciprocity idea and that the tariffs should be revoked immediately.
