Media: Montenegro Airlines Planes to Be Denied Landing in Belgrade as of

The planes of the Montenegro airline company, Montenegro Airlines (MA), will be denied permission to land at the Belgrade Airport from Wednesday, it was confirmed to Tanjug late on Tuesday evening from the Civilian Aviation Directorate, a day after Prime Minister Ana Brnabic stated that Serbia would not undertake any reciprocal measures if Serbia was not listed on the list of countries whose citizens will be allowed to enter Montenegro after the lifting of the lockdown introduced because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Montenegrin Prime Minister Dusko Markovic announced on Monday that, as of June 1, the borders will be opened to a series of countries, without on this occasion even mentioning Serbia as one of them. He said that, at the recommendation of Montenegro’s Institute of Public Health, an entry would on the following month first be enabled to the citizens of those countries in which the number of infected with coronavirus was less than 25 to every 100,000 citizens.

This caused a strong reaction of Belgrade since Markovic failed to mention Serbia among the countries that should find themselves on the list.

Serbia, on the other hand, last week opened its borders to all foreign citizens, which is a decision criticized by some as being reckless, bearing in mind that in many world countries the pandemic is still in full swing.

MA announced earlier on Tuesday that it was preparing to renew commercial flights, and that the first flights would be to Belgrade.

“MA has been preparing for commercial flights from June, after a nearly three-month break due to the coronavirus pandemic, and the first flights will be to Belgrade”, the company has said. “It is planned that MA will fly daily to Belgrade from Podgorica and Tivat, from Podgorica once or twice a day, and from Tivat once a day on all days of the week.”

On Tuesday evening, a MA plane did indeed land in Belgrade. It carried, as Blic tabloid reports, 116 Montenegrin students who are studying in Serbia.

But by the decision of the Civilian Aviation Directorate - which obviously could not be made without the approval of Serbia’s leadership - as of Wednesday MA will be revoked landing permission.

In the elaboration of the decision it is stated that “the decision of the government in Podgorica has disrupted the principle of reciprocity in the movement of passengers between the two countries”.

Apparent “decision” of the Montenegrin government “directly affects the reciprocity in the renewal of regular air traffic (...) and this to the detriment of the airlines registered in Serbia”, which represents grounds for revoking landing permission to the Montenegrin airline company, it said.

The fact that earlier on Tuesday, the Montenegrin Ambassador explained that the decision actually still hadn’t been brought seems to be completely ignored by the Serbian government.
