Number of COVID-19 Deaths in Serbia Rises to 28, State Secretary Tested Positive

The number of deaths in the coronavirus pandemic rose to 28 on Wednesday, with five new deaths reported, the deputy head of the Batut Public Health Institution Dr. Darija Kisic Tepavcevic told the daily news conference.

She said that the total number of people who tested positive for the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus which causes the COVID-19 disease had risen to 1,060, including 648 who have been hospitalized.

The five people who died were all men of an average age of 61 who had other chronic ailments.

Of the 28 deaths in total, 21 were men. The overall death rate from the coronavirus in Serbia is 2.64 percent.

“The figures show where we stand and how much we contributed to the disease spreading unobstructed. We will have meetings of the Crisis Staff tomorrow to find ways to prevent this disease as much as possible,” Kisic Tepavcevic said.

Secretary of state among corona victims

Secretary of State at the Ministry of Environment Branislav Blazic, who was diagnosed with COVID-19, passed away at a Belgrade hospital, the ministry confirmed on Wednesday.

“With his sudden departure, we lost a sincere fighter for the welfare of our society and a man who made a great human and professional contribution to the fight for a healthy environment in Serbia,” the ministry said.

Blazic was one of the founders of the ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) and so far the only member of the government reported to have contracted the coronavirus.
