Palmer: Key Goal of Intermediacy “Mutual Recognition” of Serbia and

The newly appointed US special representative for the Western Balkans Matthew Palmer said that the agreement on normalizing relations between Belgrade and Pristina would transform the entire Balkans, open the European path to Serbia and Kosovo, and in general “would be a positive thing for the region, Europe and the US”.

In this respect, the goal is for the two sides to return as soon as possible to the negotiating table and ensure a permanent agreement, Palmer said in an interview to Tanjug agency.

Bearing in mind that the elections in Kosovo will take place at the beginning of October, and in Serbia in the spring, conditions will be met for both sides to make use of the opportunity which arises, he said.

The new Kosovo government should abolish the tariffs on the Serbian goods and thus enable a renewal of the dialogue, while Serbia should put a stop to the campaign “of international delegitimization of Kosovo” through lobbying with other countries to withdraw the recognition of Kosovo independence, Palmer said.

Serbia has, by this lobbying, achieved a certain tactical success, but this has cost it, he remarked.

In any case, the key point of the future agreement of the two sides should be the “mutual recognition” of Serbia and Kosovo, he said.
