PM Rama in Parliament: Opposition’s efforts to stop elections are similar

Prime Minister Edi Rama said at Parliament on Thursday that the local government elections would be held on 30 June, whether the President of Republic and the opposition wanted this or not. Rama compared the opposition’s efforts to prevent the holding of the local government elections to recent ones made by the Taliban in Afghanistan.

He said that the international community was 100 percent on the side of the Albanian people, in order to guarantee their right to hold elections. “This is an international community that, as you read in yesterday’s [Wednesday’s] press statement issued by the OSCE – which was rather untypical – has now started to not only condemn the violence but also to ask for the identification of the parties responsible for it and for the holding as accountable of the ones inciting it.”

Rama also referred to the President’s request of information for the General Directorate of Prisons as to the security measures in prisons in view of what he called the deep crisis the country was facing. In regards to this letter, Rama said that, two days ago, the anti-election quartet [Ilir Meta, Monika Kryemadhi, Sali Berisha and Lulzim Basha] had communicated with convicts in order to have them join the supposed revolution of the opposition.

The Chair of the Democrat Parliamentary Group, Rudina Hajdari, said in response to Rama’s speech that the PM was further aggravating the situation through his arrogant speech and behavior. She also warned the President of the Republic not to dare dissolve the Parliament, saying that he would certainly end up in prison.
