PM Rama: No early general elections because of the conflict between Merkel and

Intervening at a political talk show on Top Channel TV on Thursday evening, Prime Minister Edi Rama said that there was no reason to hold early general elections after the European Council’s failure to come up with a decision on the launching of accession negotiations for Albania and North Macedonia. He was asked by the participating journalists whether he would follow in the footsteps of his North Macedonia counterpart Zoran Zaev, who had promised to do so in the wake of a “No” by the European Council.

“Not only will we not go to early elections but we will continue our work. On 19 October, the sun will rise as every other day. Albania got the “Yes” of Germany and the overwhelming majority of the European Union (EU) member states after doing its homework… Holding early elections in Albania would not solve the problems of Germany and France on how to proceed with enlargement. Only then would I be ready to seriously think about early elections. Nardi’s [Demo-Christian Party’s Nard Ndoka] and Dashi’s [Movement for National Development’s Dashamir Shehi] participation in the elections will not solve the current conflict between Merkel and Macron,” Rama said.

Earlier on Thursday, Rama was in Brussels meeting with EU High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini and with EU Commissioner for European Neighbourhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations, Johannes Hahn.

“I can confirm Albania has fulfilled its obligations. We have given this year the full recommendation to start negotiations. And in case it does not happen today… actually it is not because of any failure of Albania, its government, it’s an issue of European internal dynamics and I think it is important to be understood by citizens of Albania. And I can only urge the government to continue on the reform effort because it is in the interest of Albanian citizens and it is not to please us,” Hahn said, talking to reporters after the meeting with Rama. “Commissioner Hahn was crystal clear. We have done what was asked.

But apart from what we did and what we need to do, we are in a situation where the European Council must decide what its members want and what they do not want to do for their family, having in mind that one important member of the family [France] wants a different approach to the entire [enlargement] process. As the Commissioner said, we will continue the reforms’ process,” Rama said after the meeting with Hahn.
