President and DP Chair Concerned Over Albanian Citizens Blocked at Border

The President of the Republic, Ilir Meta, voiced his concern on Thursday night on what he said was the dire situation of Albanian citizens that were blocked at Albania’s border crossing points (BCPs) with Greece and Montenegro. He called for a prompt solution from the Albanian authorities to end the citizens’ long waiting at the BCPs. “The Albanian authorized bodies should inform them without delay on the new state of things and procedures to be observed at the BCPs on account of the COVID-19 pandemic, so that no unmanageable crowds are created at the border,” Meta said. He called on the Albanian citizens to avoid at the present time any movements that are neither urgent nor indispensable. The authorities, he said, should bolster their co-operation and solidarity with the citizens, in order to overcome this extraordinary challenge without paying any costs.

Democratic Party Chair Lulzim Basha described the situation of Albanian citizens stranded at the BCPs as dramatic, saying that it should be solved urgently. “The government should allow the return of citizens who are being held hostage for two days at the Albanian border with Greece and Montenegro. The citizens’ abandonment is an act of inhumane irresponsibility. No country in the world prevents its own citizens from entering their own country and going back to their own home,” the DP Chair posted on Twitter.

Speaking at a TV interview on Thursday evening, Rama urged some Albanian students in Turkey, who had contacted the TV talk-show interviewing him, to stay where they are until the pandemic is over. He considered any Albanian citizens coming from COVID-19-infected countries as potential bombs that risked unbalancing the present linear curve of the virus’s spread in the country. According to Rama, Albania was able to repatriate a total of 2,000 citizens who were trapped abroad, and this was a high figure compared to other countries in the region that we're able to repatriate smaller numbers only.

The Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs informed on Thursday that the repatriation flights are over, resulting in the return of 1,105 Albanian citizens to the country through nine flights taking place over four days. MEFA said to have helped earlier the return of 686 Albanian citizens, and that the total figure of Albanian citizens who had made a return to Albania since the COVID-19 outbreak amounted to 1791 individuals.
