RFE: the US Warns Serbia of Risks from Purchasing Weapons from China

The United States has warned Serbia that it should be aware of the risks brought by the purchase of weapons from Chinese companies and assessed that the choice of the supplier should reflect Serbia’s proclaimed objective to integrate the EU, Radio Free Europe (RFE) reports on Monday.

On the occasion of Serbia’s decision to buy Chinese FK-3 surface-to-air missile defense system, representatives of the US embassy in Belgrade told RFE that the purchase of army and defense equipment is a sovereign decision of each country, but that governments should be aware of related short-term and long-term risks and of the price of dealing with Chinese companies.

Each country should have the confidence that the procurement of equipment will not jeopardize its national security or economic sovereignty, the embassy has stated and added that such confidence is non-existent in case “sellers of military and defense equipment are dependent on an authoritarian government such as the Chinese”.

The embassy states that it advises Serbia “to work on more complete alignment with EU Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP)”.

“The choice of the supplier should reflect Serbia’s proclaimed goal: to integrate Europe as much as possible. There are other dealers that are not dependent on authoritarian regimes but do offer equipment not just capable of satisfying Serbia’s defense needs, but that is also comparable by quality and price”, the embassy has stated.

The procurement of the FK-3 surface-to-air missile defense system has been included in the annual report of state company Yugoimport SDPR and enclosed in the Business Registers Agency.

In that document, Yugoimport SDPR states that 163 agreements on import from 31 countries worth a total of 620.3 million dollars have been implemented in 2019 and that they include the purchase of drones from China and the first known purchase of FK-3 in Europe.

“Most of the import is related to streamlining the MiG-29 jet, procuring the drone system and the FK-3 anti-aircraft system”, reads the report which was initially publicized by website Balkan Security Network on August 2.
