Serbian Journalist Arrested for Reporting on Pandemic Receives Deutsche Welle

Ana Lalic, a journalist with the Nova portal, is one of the 17 laureates of this year’s Freedom of Speech Award, which is presented by Deutsche Welle, it was announced on Sunday.

Lalic was arrested at the beginning of April and spent a night in a police station, for allegedly “causing panic” by her reporting on the problems faced by the Clinical Center of Vojvodina (KCV) during the coronavirus epidemic. At the end of April, the Prosecution in Novi Sad dismissed the criminal charges against Lalic due to a lack of evidence.      Lalic reported on Sunday that her car’s tire had been flashed on Friday and that the police had investigated.

“I don’t want to feel scared, to be dragged down into paranoia, and to keep looking over my shoulder in the street. Now, unfortunately, I have a security detail assigned to me by my company. I’m in a type of convulsion,” she told Deutsche Welle.

“I believe that I was released from prison solely because of collegiality and solidarity, not only in Serbia but throughout Europe. Such support is a type of shield. It convinces me that this job makes sense, that the truth must come out in the end, regardless of how much it is being arrested,” Lalic said.

“I hope that the government has learned a lesson, that no journalists will ever be arrested again in Serbia for doing their job because we have shown that we will not permit that,” added Lalic.
