A group of journalists and media organizations filed criminal charges with the Higher Public Prosecution in Belgrade against Milomir Maric, editor in chief of Happy TV, for insults he voiced against Belgrade University Professor Danijel Sinani.

The charges against Maric were filed by the Slavko Curuvija Foundation, Independent Journalists’ Association of Serbia (NUNS), Independent Society of Journalists of Vojvodina (NDNV) and Association of Online Media for two acts of crime: inciting national, racial and religious hatred and intolerance and damaging reputation over racial, religious, national or other affiliation.

A joint statement by those organizations said that the Higher Public Prosecution had not informed the public that proceedings had been launched against Maric a month after he insulted Sinani in a live show on TV Happy.

The Regulatory Body for Electronic Media (REM) announced proceedings against Maric but that body’s Council has not reviewed the case a month after the insults were voiced judging by records from REM Council meetings published on its web site.

“The criminal charges are meant to remind the Higher Public Prosecution that it has the power to secure the consistent implementation of the law and that the Criminal Code expressly forbids the inciting of national, racial and religious hatred and intolerance. We are calling the REM to consider this and other TV Happy violations as soon as possible and take the appropriate measures under the law,” the statement said.

Maric voiced several offensive remarks about Professor Sinani who took part with Belgrade University Rector Ivanka Popovic in negotiations with students who locked themselves into the Rectorate building for more than 10 days.

Among other things, Maric said that Sinani has “a suspicious surname". Sinani is a frequent Albanian surname.
