Serbian Opposition Leaders Will Meet Soon to Agree on Election Boycott

The leader of the Freedom and Justice Party (SSP), former Belgrade Mayor and Democratic Party (DS) leader Dragan Djilas said on Wednesday that a meeting would be organized soon for all the parties of the so-called real opposition to reach agreement on basic issues related to the almost certain boycott of coming parliamentary elections.

Djilas told N1 TV (practically the only station on which opposition leaders can appear) that along with the parties in the Alliance for Serbia (SzS) and participants in the 1 in 5 Million protests who signed the so-called Agreement with the People (on the minimum of conditions for elections) an agreement should be reached with other true opposition parties on a possible boycott, adding that this would be very important.

“That does not mean that someone who has not signed the Agreement with the People is not really in the opposition. The Don’t Drown Belgrade and Local Front movements are certainly in the opposition.

“It is fundamentally important for the decision on a boycott to be taken by all those who are the real opposition. Without imposing anything on anyone.

“The decision that we do not recognize the results of those elections, which we usually call a boycott, has to a joint decision by the entire opposition and we have to go out into Serbia to explain to people what we are doing and what will happen before the elections, what will happen on election day and what will happen later.

“We have to explain to people that what we are living in is not normal. In any case, the fact that yesterday’s meeting between the authorities and opposition was the news of the day speaks enough about the kind of country we are living in,” Djilas said.

Commenting the meeting, Djilas said that it went as expected and that it was not a secret negotiation between the authorities and opposition but a round table about the reports of the CRTA and CeSID NGOs on irregularities at previous elections.

"We in the SzS can’t negotiate about the demands from the protest. We do not negotiate on the 42 recommendations and six conclusions. The only negotiations that might be held would be about how to implement them and there can be no mention of giving up any of the demands,” Djilas said.

According to VIP NEWS sources present at Tuesday’s meeting, SNS representatives heckled and insulted Djilas while he was talking. “You are a thief. Tell us where did you hide stolen money” Vladimir Djukanovic said.

Djilas did not comment on the make-up of the SNS delegation saying: “If Vucic thinks that Djukanovic represents him well, that is his business”.
