Serbian Opposition Meeting: No One in Favor of Taking Part in Election

No opposition party which took part at the meeting on Friday is in favor of taking part at elections under present conditions, declared president of the Party of Freedom and Justice (SSO) Dragan Djilas, who presided the gathering.

Djilas recalled that some parties have already made their decision to boycott elections, that some will make that decision within the next 20 days, and that others will make the decision on election day.

“However, no party is prepared to run at such elections”, Djilas said.

“We are all aware that not running at such election is no easy decision, that there will be pressure on people to come out, but we are also aware that no one can force us to jump into a pool with no water in it and demand that we swim”, the SSP president declared.

He also said all parties will each make their own election decision, but that the position of all organizations gathered around the Alliance for Serbia (SzS) are absolutely identical – it is pointless to take part in the elections under the present conditions.

A representative of the Dveri Movement Jugoslav Kiprijanovic said that Dveri will make official their decision on the boycott in the days to come at a session of their party bodies.

President of New Party (NS) Zoran Zivkovic declared after the meeting that this party does not rule out the boycott as an option but that it still hasn’t received the explanation what does the boycott relate to.

He recalled the case of Albania where opposition boycotted recent local elections, without anyone challenging the legitimacy of Edi Rama, in spite of a very modest turnout and the boycott by most of the opposition.

Konstantin Samofalov from the Social-Democratic party underlined, after the meeting, that it is crucial to uniting in the boycott. Otherwise, it won't make much sense.

The representative of the Civil Platform Jovan Jovanovic said after the meeting, that not turning out at “fake elections” is the best way of defending democratic institutions.

One of the organizers of the “1 in 5 million” protests Srdjan Markovic also took part at the meeting and said that the regime of Aleksandar Vucic cannot be changed by using old methods and that opposition’s unity is the soft belly of the regime.

He said, at the next gathering on September 1, the protest organizers will call all opposition organization for a boycott.

In addition to organizers and representatives of parties gathered within the SzS, the meeting at the Stari Grad municipality was also be attended by representatives of the Social-Democratic Party (SDS), Movement of Free Citizens (PSG), Association “One in Five Million”, movement “Let Us Not Drown Belgrade” (NDMBGD), Enough is Enough (DJB), the Local Front and the Modern Serbia Party (SMS).
