Serbian PM: If Kosovo Officials Want to Travel to Washington with Maximum Demands, They Better Not Come at All

Serbian PM: If Kosovo Officials Want to Travel to Washington with Maximum

All the demands announced by Kosovo Prime Minister Avdullah Hoti ahead of the meeting of Serbian and Kosovo official on June 27 in Washington are unacceptable for Serbia, and if Pristina keeps insisting on them, they better not come for talks resumption at all, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic declared on Wednesday.

Earlier on Wednesday, Serbian media reported, quoting Kosovo media, that Hoti said that, in addition to the principal demand for Serbia to recognize Kosovo’s independence, he will also advocate for membership in the European Union and the UN, the suspension of Resolution 1244, as well as recognition by five EU members which haven’t recognized Kosovo yet.

“If that is the platform with which Hoti or [Kosovo President Hashim] Thaci want to come for negotiations somewhere, they better not come at all, and who among them comes makes no difference to me. That is all I have to say,” Vucic declared during his visit to Lajkovac in central Serbia.

“If one thinks that they’ve set their position by repeating every day like a parrot that they made many compromises and god knows what else – that’s super. We don’t have to talk, let’s see how we can function, preserve peace and stability, and that’s all. But if they think that they can hurt Serbia and change Belgrade’s standpoint and my personal standpoint through blackmail, pressure, and threats, then they are very much mistaken”, Vucic said.

He added that he expects nothing “spectacular” from the meeting in Washington, just a “rational and pragmatic dialogue”.

“These are my expectation. Serbia is too small to give orders to the White House but big enough to say what are its interests, which it can, will and must defend”, Vucic said.

As opposed to this, Thaci declared that it is “realistically possible” to reach an agreement on the normalization of relations between Kosovo and Serbia at the meeting of representatives in Washington and that only the US is capable of producing that.

In an interview with the Albanian program of Voice of America, Thaci said that if no agreement is reached on June 27, both Kosovo and Serbia will be “losers”.

If however an agreement is concluded, both sides with a win, he said, Belgrade media report.
