Spring Session of Serbian Parliament Begins, Opposition Hold Session in Hall in

The Serbian parliament, on Tuesday, began its regular spring session, but without the presence of a part of the opposition which organized a parallel “session” in the parliament hall as a sign of protest over the violation of democratic principles and the obstruction of the parliament’s work on the part of the ruling majority.

The MPs were greeted by a red carpet in front of the building and the honorary guard of the Serbian army and the opposition briefly spread out the banner “1 out of 5 million”, which is the slogan under which every week, since the beginning of December in Belgrade, and then also in other cities in Serbia, civic protests are being held.

MPs of the Democratic Party (DS), the Social Democratic Party (SDS), the People’s Party, Dveri and independent MPs, said that they had in this manner formally opened the parallel session of parliament outside the parliament chamber since, as they underlined, the current authorities were violating the basic democratic principles and institutions and preventing dialogue and debate in parliament.

The session within the chamber was attended by the MPs of the ruling majority and the MPs of the nominally opposition Serbian Radical Party (SRS) of Vojislav Seselj, who at the beginning of the session used their right to pose questions and seek information from the authorities.

Within the “parallel opened parliament” in the parliament hall, a part of the opposition MPs asked questions on Kosovo, the murder of one of the political leaders of the Kosovo Serbs, Oliver Ivanovic, public officials who abused their positions and the not realized solutions towards agricultural workers.

They also presented the proposals of the additions to the agenda of the parliament session and requested the dismissal of Parliament Speaker Maja Gojkovic.

MP of the People’s Party, Miroslav Aleksic, asked the President and Prime Minister of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic and Ana Brnabic, whether they would sign the legally binding agreement with Kosovo and enable its membership in the UN and in this way to recognize Kosovo.

“They have given away everything, it remains for them to sign a legally binding agreement. Do not lie to the Serbian citizens”, Aleksic said at the press conference in the parliament hall.
