Tense situation in the Greek border as Albanians are prevented to enter country

There were tensions in the Kakavija and Kapshtica Borders Crossing Points on the border with Greece over the weekend as tens of Albanian citizens, who are trying to leave Greece, are being prevented to enter the country by the Albanian authorities. Prime Minister Edi Rama reiterated over the weekend that the borders will open only when COVID-19 is no longer a danger for Albania. Democratic Party Chair Lulzim Basha reacted to this situation by dispelling the government’s handling of it as criminal and inhumane.

He called on PM Rama to let the people enter the country, submit them to the COVID-19 tests and quarantine them for the needed period of time at the National Centre established for this purpose at the Armed Forces Holiday Home in Durrës. Also, the President of the Republic, Ilir Meta, called for an immediate solution of this situation, calling on the authorities to abide by the constitutional and international obligations that the Albanian state has towards its citizens. “I reiterate my appeal for co-operation and understanding, solidarity and responsibility by both our authorities and citizens for the sake of public and life-preservation interests,” Meta said in his reaction over social media.
