Thaçi: I Will Resign if Kosovo Parliament Does Not Accept Agreement with

Kosovo President announced on Tuesday that he would submit his resignation in the event that the Kosovo parliament does not approve the agreement with Serbia, and that he will call a referendum on the joining of the three south-Serbian municipalities to Kosovo; Prime Minister Ramush Haradinaj, in his reaction to this statement of Thaci’s, pointed out that the Kosovo Constitution did not allow territorial aspirations towards other countries.

Thaci said that he was convinced that he would win at that referendum since “over 75% of the citizens of Kosovo supports the joining of Presevo, Bujanovac, and Medvedja”, municipalities with a significant share of ethnic Albanians among the population.

Thaci said for Raport TV that the joining of Bujanovac, Medvedja and Presevo “can be a part of the agreement with Serbia” and that in that case, this will not be a violation, but rather an amendment of the Constitution.

Thaci said that the agreement, once it is achieved, he would submit to the Kosovo parliament which can adopt it or not and added that he would submit his resignation and call a referendum if the parliament of Kosovo does not approve the joining of Bujanovac, Medvedja, and Presevo to Kosovo based on the agreement.

He said that at such a referendum he would win since “99% of the people from Bujanovac, Medvedja and Presevo want to join Kosovo”, while between 75 and 80% of the citizens in Kosovo share the same wish.

However, in the statements of the officials and citizens of the Presevo Valley, it is underlined that they do not wish to join Kosovo if this means the division of Kosovo. Thaci denied that the agreement could imply giving up a part of the territory of Kosovo.

The Kosovo President also stated that he was prepared to answer the potential summons of the Kosovo Special Court for the crimes of the members of the self-proclaimed Kosovo Liberation Army during the 1998-99 conflicts.
