First reactions follow Trump's Appointment of Richard Grenell as Special

US President Donald Trump has appointed diplomat Richard Grenell (53), the current US Ambassador to Germany, as the special envoy for the dialogue between Serbia and Kosovo, agencies reported on Friday citing an official statement.

The media claim that Trump’s decision is rather surprising because in late August diplomat Matthew Palmer was appointed a special representative of Secretary of State Mike Pompeo for the Western Balkans.

It is expected that the EU will appoint its representative in the dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina.

Surprising news for Vucic: Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic stated on Friday that the news of Grenell’s appointment was surprising to him.

“I immediately spoke with Grenell today. Of course, he is a serious man, with Trump’s trust, and we will see in which direction that will go,” Vucic said.

The regime media in Serbia immediately then reported that Vucic spoke on the phone with Grenell, without providing any details on the conversation.

Thaci believes appointment reinforces faith in final agreement: Kosovo President Hashim Thaci stated that he spoke with Grenell and said that his appointment reinforces faith in the achievement of a peace agreement with Serbia.

He pointed out that Grenell’s appointment also reinforces Kosovo’s certainty and trust in the negotiations process, as well as the faith in the possibility of achieving a peaceful and final agreement with Serbia.

Analysts: Grenell will take the lead, impose the idea of division: Grenell will take the dominant role in the American approach to the dialogue between Serbia and Kosovo and push out Palmer, who believes Daniel Serwer, a US analyst, and professor at the Johns Hopkins University.

Serwer labeled the decision to appoint Grenell as “bizarre”.

He pointed out that Grenell holds a higher rank than Palmer for two reasons: he is an ambassador and has direct ties to the White House.

Serwer believes that Grenell’s appointment is bizarre and that it hits of an attempt to revive the idea of an exchange of territories between Belgrade and Pristina.

He adds that the idea to divide Kosovo is terrible and that it died a natural death several months ago, and that it is a bad plan to try and revive it.

Commenting the headline of the lead article in the Belgrade daily Politika about the appointment of the new mediator for Kosovo (“Little Trump, A Thorn in Brussels’ and Berlin’s Eye”), Simon Ilse, the Boell Stiftung Serbia, Kosovo & Montenegro Head of the Office, wrote the following on his Twitter account.

“‘Little Trump’ designated for Kosovo-Serbia peace negotiations. In Germany, we don’t think he’s a skillful diplomat since he told [far-right website] Breitbart News that he’s in Europe to strengthen new conservative leaders and acted imperialistically on the Iran deal. Good luck to us all...“ Ilse wrote.
