Vucic: Kosovo’s Independence Is Not And Will Not Be Topic of Talks at the

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic dismissed on Tuesday the accusations coming from one part of the opposition that the upcoming meeting with the Kosovo representatives, which Special Presidential envoy for Serbia-Kosovo dialogue Richard Grenell announced a day before for 27 June at the White House, would be an introduction to Belgrade’s recognition of Kosovo’s independence.

Grenell said he had received the commitment from the governments of Serbia and Kosovo to temporarily pause the derecognition campaign and the seeking of international memberships in order to meet in Washington.

“I am ashamed to respond seriously to this. Neither will it be a topic, nor will we allow it to be a topic. It only tells what others would do”, Vucic told reporters when he was asked how he commented on claims that Serbia would recognize Kosovo’s independence soon, or even immediately after the meeting.

Vucic said he did not see “any substantive solution that could be equally acceptable or equally unacceptable for both sides” in order to expect a final agreement any time soon.

“We are ahead of a difficult period. Miroslav Lajcak is coming [EU special envoy to Serbia-Kosovo talks], I am leaving for Moscow after the elections, and then we need to agree which delegation should go to Washington. And after that, there will be some more important meetings that I cannot even talk about ... This afternoon, I have five telephone conversations with people from Europe and the world. Some will be for the public and some will not. Certainly, this is not an easy period, but we will know that we are fighting for our national and state interests”, he said.

Vucic called on all those who claim that Serbia will recognize the independence of Kosovo to stop with “lies and fabrications” and “let him work seriously”.

I talked to Grenell and Lajcak 50 times.  I have met [President Vladimir] Putin more times than all the other Serbs combined. And everyone thinks they know more about Kosovo and what these people think than I do”, Vucic said.
