Vucic Sends Letter to Xi in Support of China’s Actions in Hong Kong

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic supported in a letter to Chinese President Xi Jinping the adoption of a security law which is widely seen as a threat to Hong Kong autonomy, emphasizing that Serbia “supported sovereignty, territorial integrity and national security” of China.

Contrary to the international condemnations of China’s parliament decision to back the security legislation which would make it a crime to undermine Beijing’s authority in the territory, Vucic said in the letter that “Serbia, as an independent state, opposed the interfering in the internal affairs of a sovereign country”.

“Serbia and China are committed to respecting the international law at the global level” and Serbia “condemns the attempts to undermine reunification” of the country, Vucic wrote, Politika reports.

Vucic’s support for China is not surprising in this case at all. Given that in China, along with Russia, Serbia has a major ally in opposing the recognition of Kosovo’s independence, under Vucic’s rule the country has completely subordinated its entire foreign policy to the issue, and on almost every occasion when the positions of the West on anything are in drastic contrast to those in China, it sidelines with Beijing.

In addition, Vucic himself has been using every opportunity in the last few years to demonstrate his extremely condescending, flattering attitude towards Xi. He did this emphatically in the early phase of the coronavirus epidemic in Serbia as well, when he presented China and Xi as the only friends that the Serbian people could count on in the situation.
