Vucic: Serbia Will Be Requested to Fully Recognise Kosovo and Not Get Anything

There is a “terribly difficult” period ahead for Serbia concerning Kosovo since it will be requested to recognize the independence of Kosovo, and nothing will be offered to it in return, the President of Serbia and leader of the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) Aleksandar Vucic said on Tuesday.

At the session of the expanded make-up of the Executive and Main Board of the SNS, Vucic said that pressures on Serbia to recognize Kosovo would only increase in the following period.

“A full [recognition] of the independence [of Kosovo], without divisions or anything for Serbia” will be requested.

“And we should also call ourselves lucky if they do not set up a separate tribunal for the Serbs”, he added.

Vucic said that in the past weeks he had met with many people who had suggested to him that Serbia should be the one to make some move which would “mollify” the Kosovo authorities to abolish the decision on the introduction of 100% tariffs on Serbian goods, introduced last November.

“The pressures have never been greater, there is nothing the Albanians have not done against Serbia and the Serbs… For almost six months we have been waiting for the international community to take pity and ask its child to abolish tariffs, and nothing has happened”, Vucic said.

However, Serbia will not give up on the standpoint that there will be no continued dialogue until the tariffs are abolished, he said.

“I will not agree to the dialogue without the previous abolishment of tariffs”, said Vucic, adding that “those who have the habit to call him on the phone each time the Serbs only raise their hands into a defense position” should cease to attempt doing so in the future.

“Do not call me. I am not available”, he said, at the same time announcing that, in the event that Pristina does not abolish tariffs until the first week of May, he would, at the session of the SNS Main Board appear with a proposal of countermeasures against Pristina.

Even when we bear in mind that Vucic has usurped all the instruments of power in the country, it remains unclear how and why the announcement of countermeasures should first be revealed at the meeting of his party, instead of the government dealing with it, which is solely authorized for such issues.

On the other hand, this example also shows that Vucic has no interest of preserving before the local of the foreign public at least a semblance that there is anyone in the country who makes decisions besides him.

Vucic again varied one of his famous theories concerning Kosovo – the one according to which he was allegedly ready to resolve this issue, but the pressure of the local public would not allow it.

“When I said that we have a chance for a compromise they declared me to be a traitor, and that was possibly also our last chance to create a compromise. Today no one is even offering this compromise any more”, he said.

Speaking of the upcoming talks with the representatives of the Kosovo Albanians and with German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Emmanuel Macron, in Berlin at the end of April, Vucic said that “nothing good awaits” Serbia there either.

“The only thing I expect is a request for [establishing] a new format of dialogue where the goal should be the recognition of Kosovo [by Serbia]”, he said.
